Hampton School District Library and Media Learner Competencies for Grades K-8
Centre School Grades K-2
By the end of second grade, students will be able to:
Understand how books are meant to be read.
Recognize and label parts of a book.
Read, understand and tell about fiction.
Tell the difference between fiction and nonfiction.
Ask and answer who, what, where, why and how questions to show understanding of a story.
Select books that allow them to make connections with themselves and the global community.
Marston School Grades 3-5
By the end of fifth grade, students will be able to continue work on all of the above plus: Listen actively to texts.
Read independently for pleasure and information.
Show understanding of a text by asking questions, discussing it with classmates, and writing responses.
Locate a diversity of texts in the library.
Identify multiple genres of writing (e.g) mysteries, historical fiction, realistic fiction...
Hampton Academy Grades 6-8
By the end of eighth grade, students will be able to continue work on all of the above plus:
Select books that foster connections between oneself and the global community.
Share reading experiences to build relationships with others.
Formulate questions, develop search strategies, and seek information from a wide variety of resources.
Consistently question and evaluate the validity and accuracy of information.
Ethically use information, technology, and media by respecting copyright, avoiding plagiarism, and following MLA citation guidelines.
Responsibly apply information, technology, and media to personalize learning. Use technology as a tool to research, organize, evaluate, collaborate, and communicate information.
